Keep the Fire Burning

“Keeping the Fire Burning All Year Long”

The start of a new school year always brings with it an unmistakable energy: the smell of freshly sharpened pencils, the sight of newly organized classrooms, the promise of new rosters, and the excitement of a clean slate. We enter August or September with renewed purpose, determined to build upon last year’s lessons and to make this year even better. Yet, as the weeks roll on, routines settle in, and the novelty fades, the challenge becomes this: how do we keep that beginning-of-the-year fire alive all year long?

The answer lies in being intentional, in how we lead, how we reflect, and how we sustain the joy that first brought us to education.

1. Live in Your Purpose
At the heart of every great educator is a calling, one that shapes futures and carries eternal consequences. Our work matters deeply, even when the results aren’t immediately visible. The seeds we plant in our students’ hearts and minds may not bloom this year, or even next, but they will grow. When we ground ourselves in that truth, we find strength in the small moments and meaning in the mundane. Remember: purpose is the anchor that steadies us when the waves of the school year start to swell.

2. Measure What You Expect
It’s easy to become overwhelmed when thinking about the whole school year as one monumental journey. Instead, focus on incremental progress. Set meaningful, measurable goals and celebrate the milestones along the way, no matter how small. Every victory, whether it’s improved attendance, a breakthrough moment for a student, or a successful parent engagement effort, deserves recognition. Celebrating along the journey fuels motivation and reinforces that the hard work is paying off. Sharing these wins with peers, students, and families turns success into a shared experience, and that shared joy becomes contagious.

3. Energize Those Around You
Leadership is not about carrying the torch alone; it’s about lighting the torches of others. When we intentionally lift others up, we not only help them see their own impact, but we also renew our own sense of purpose. Encouragement breeds energy. Gratitude multiplies joy. When we focus on the good in each day, we begin to see that the energy from the first day of school doesn’t have to fade. It simply transforms into a steady flame that warms every moment that follows.

4. Find Joy in Every Day
Some days are easy to love. Others challenge us to dig deep to find the spark. But even in the hardest days, there’s joy to be found, sometimes hidden within the problem that pushes us toward innovation and growth. The key is to be intentional about finding that joy, sharing it, and reminding yourself and others why we do this work.

As school leaders, teachers, and staff, our influence stretches far beyond the walls of our classrooms. Each day is another opportunity to model perseverance, purpose, and positivity for the next generation. The fire of a new school year doesn’t have to flicker out. If we tend it with purpose, celebrate along the way, lift others up, and choose joy, that fire becomes a guiding light all year long.

So, keep stoking the flame. The best leaders don’t just start strong; they stay steadfast. And in doing so, they ignite a culture where the passion for learning and growth never cools.
